Down South – A Falklands War Diary by Chris Parry
Down South – A Falklands War Diary to be published by Viking next year, is based on the hitherto unpublished diary of HMS ANTRIM’s helicopter observer, Lieutenant (at the time) Chris Parry.
It was thought that his diary had been lost, but, thanks to a clear-out of a working lifetime of papers and records last year, a revealing, detailed and, on occasions, intimate account has emerged of life at sea during a conflict which defined the politics of the Thatcher era and influenced the ethos and thinking of the Royal Navy for a generation.
Chris Parry’s subsequent career included command of the destroyer HMS GLOUCESTER, the assault ship HMS FEARLESS and the United Kingdom’s Amphibious Task Group, as well as numerous senior policy and operational roles. He retired from the Royal Navy as a Rear Admiral in 2008. Today, he has an international reputation as a one of the country’s leading strategic thinkers and forecasters, advising governments and companies about geopolitical risk and future trends, and is an active broadcaster and frequent columnist in national newspapers.
