Ian Pont
Ian Pont - The Fast Bowler’s Bible (Crowood Press, 2006) played first-class cricket for Notts, Essex and Natal. As a right arm fast bowler, he had the ability to genuinely hurry some of the best batsmen. But Ian was probably best remembered for his amazing throwing arm. He has the second longest throw on a cricket ball of all time (138 yards) and had professional baseball trials in the mid 1980’s with 6 Major League teams as a pitcher. He clocked speeds close to 100 mph.
He retired in 1988 to begin a career in marketing & sales. In 1992 he landed the contract to produce the World Cup coloured cricket clothing shirts. Ian then helped negotiate the rights for coloured clothing in the UK and the Axa Sunday League was born in 1993 for the first time in glorious multicolour. Ian used his knowledge of advanced biomechanics learned in America and his work alongside world-class javelin coaches to apply it to fast bowlers. Since 1995, Ian has coached hundreds of players from Test to club level, and recently worked with Essex and Northants County Cricket Clubs. He previously joined the England Team at their training camp for the World Cup in Port Elizabeth, South Africa in 2003. He was assistant Head Coach to the Dutch at the 2007 world cup and also ECB National Skill Set Coach for fast bowling.
Ian is widely viewed as one of the greatest bowling coaches in the world.
'I wish that I had met Ian Pont, the bowling coach, ten years before I did... Ian is an expert in his field and has got some excellent ideas on how to engineer a bowling action.' Ronnie Irani, Essex and England
